The main building of the Shanghai Exhibition Center was completed in March 1955 and is the earliest exhibition venue built in Shanghai after the founding of the People's Republic of China. For over forty years, many major political and foreign affairs events have been held here, receiving three generations of leaders of the Party and dozens of foreign heads of state and government, and organizing and hosting hundreds of domestic and foreign exhibitions. It has now become the main conference center and famous exhibition venue in the city, and is one of the windows for external exchanges.

In 2001, the main building of the Shanghai Exhibition Center underwent a comprehensive overhaul and renovation. After the renovation, the architectural style is more charming, the environment is more beautiful, the exhibition area is larger, the functions are more complete, and the equipment and facilities are safer and more reliable.

The southern part of the Shanghai Exhibition Center is composed of a sequence hall, a central hall, East Hall 1, West Hall 1, and West Hall 2 to form the exhibition area, while the northern part is composed of a Friendship Hall and the renovated East Hall 2 to form the conference area. The two areas are independent and interconnected, forming a functional pattern of South Exhibition and North Conference that can be separated and combined.

The Shanghai Exhibition Center is located in the bustling center of Jing'an District, adjacent to Nanjing West Road to the north and Yan'an Middle Road and Yan'an Road Elevated to the south, with rare geographical advantages in Shanghai.

From a bird's-eye view, the Shanghai Exhibition Center resembles a soaring airplane, covering an area of 93000 square meters with a building area of 80000 square meters. It has 42 multifunctional exhibition halls, over 100 conference rooms, a total office space of 10000 square meters, as well as a theater, banquet hall, coffee shop, and more. There is a circular road in the courtyard that connects six squares with a total area of 15000 square meters, 15000 square meters of garden green space, over 1000 square meters of large lighting and music fountains, and seven buildings, forming a seamless whole. There are 9 gates leading to Yan'an Middle Road and Nanjing West Road in the north and south of the courtyard, providing convenient transportation both inside and outside. Created a comfortable and beautiful activity environment for guests from all sides.
