The predecessor of Wuhan International Convention and Exhibition Center, Wuhan Exhibition Hall, was the Sino Soviet Friendship Palace built in 1956. It was the fourth large-scale comprehensive exhibition hall built nationwide after Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou in the early days of liberation. It was the initiator and executive director unit of the China Exhibition Hall Association. Since its establishment 40 years ago, the museum has hosted over 700 large and medium-sized exhibitions both domestically and internationally, enjoying a high reputation in the exhibition industry both domestically and internationally. In 1994, Wuhan City signed a land lease and joint development contract with Taiwan Donglian Group for the Wuhan Exhibition Center. After the contract was signed, the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee and Government decided to build the largest, modern, and professional Wuhan International Convention and Exhibition Center in central China on the basis of the original venue. From March to April 1995, the Wuhan Exhibition Center was flattened twice. Later, due to the impact of the financial crisis, the exhibition center was delayed until December 17, 1999, with a construction period of 20 months. It was completed and put into operation in September 2001.

The outdoor square covers an area of 54000 square meters and is integrated with the Zhongshan Office Green Square, forming the largest urban center market in Wuhan.
